Wonder how easy it would be to make Toni start smoking? Seems like everyone can just push her around.

**Totally not based on me, I have never been remotely peer pressured into doing anything. I'm a leader! I browbeat people into doing what I want them to do!

Sure, Toni knows its stupid, but she still gets to check out Jared. So it might be all worth it?

Yes, Toni is wearing a shirt. Nobody will be able to get that off of her, not with all the bruises. It's impressive and manly to have some arm and eye bruises, its another to show that you were literally destroyed at the hands of someone bigger than you.

Toni won all the time, earlier, because she had all the energy stored up inside her. I'm not sure she is going to be winning now - she is...well, still having issues but more balanced lately.

@Valley: Imbalance is how Toni has won in the past. Anger at her situation and how Vic attacks it. Anger at how her body is one way but wants to be another.
In this case, I think she would win, not because of how she feels about herself, but about how she looks at the social situation. This is the first time she has really been out of the house since the incident. And now she has to win it for Sophie, for Vic, and probably somewhere deep down, to try to impress Jared.
Maybe pain itself is the motivator? To get in the water with this level of painkillers and fractured collarbone, if you are going to swim, you are going to swim at the absolute max you can to get the most use out of your own stupidity, right?
Then again, maybe it is all irrelevant and Toni won't win, because she can't connect with her inner spirit via rage or peace. There are a lot of possibilities, it can be interesting trying to figure out whats going on in there.

Transgender people many times find that due to circumstances, they may be forced into being in 'male mode' at one time, and then 'female mode' at other more opportune times. Even though they do this, for the vast majority of transgender people, they do not have a dual or split personality. Having a split personality is a classic symptom of serious mental illness, much like schizophrenia is. Transgender people are not mentally ill, with a sanity threatening split personality, in this serious mental sense.

That being said, Toni is caught off balance by Vic's request. A modest feminine disposition would dictate that Toni decline the offer to swim in the swim meet, based on her need to fully recover from her injuries. On the other hand, a typical male response would be one of going into the situation with a 'devil-may-care', 'win-at-all-costs' attitude. It is unfortunate that Toni, when pressed into a corner, socially speaking, with that challenge of Vic's, reverts to the male mode with the subsequent plan of action. Toni soon regrets acting the part of a male influenced Tony, but she can not back out of it now. So Toni unwittingly and temporary becomes the former Tony, The Swimming Sensation. This incident should show Toni the necessity of presenting herself as a mature female at all time and under all circumstances, and to discard the male dominate personality and attitudes that have no place in her presentation of herself these days.

I like the subtle switchover to italics for internal monologues :)

@wraithoffire: Its actually an entirely different font. I chose it because it is italicized by design, but not as far off of comic sans as most of the other 'feminine' fonts are.
It represents Tony making the transition, mentally, into Toni.
Spoiler, eventually, also her voice. As she tries to match her presentation with her mind.
