I had this conversation with my religion teacher in grade 10. I didn't say I was trans*, of course, because I refused to allow myself to accept that.
But he made it very clear that Deut 22:5 was about a very specific culture, and that those who use it these days to hate are misguided at best.

There are actually a huge number of case-specific cultural situations that the old testament refers to. Out of context, the torah seems so filled with wrath and hate. With context of comparative religion, it really shows that the god of the jewish people was about loving them and giving them everything they needed to survive.

Anyways, I hope this message about Duet 22:5 reaches the right ears. God may have given you this hardship, but he still loves you. Don't buy into the hate.

Edit: Apparently this made it to Reddit and a lot of people want the context to which I am referring. Here ya go;
http://www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?pid=S1010-99192013000100001&script=sci_arttext

Additionally, the passage you may be looking for that my religion teacher taught about;
"However, Clarke shares Matthew Henry's view that the text might mean more than a simple change in dress.25 Both scholars suggest that the text may refer to the idolatrous custom of the Gentiles. For example, in the worship of Venus, to which that of Astarte or Ashtaroth among the Canaanites bore a striking resemblance, women appear in armour and men in women's clothes."

I hope this helps to clarify why the Old testament is for building a civilization and not a religious text, and if you take it as that, a whole lot of the really messed up things make a whole lot more sense.

that's what bothers me with religion. Everyone takes the message they want and runs with it but imho everyone who doesn't see the big picture of acceptance and love Christianity has to offer just doesn't get the point.

I felt very happy in my church until I discovered that most people there tried to be better than everybody by being more pious and more faithful than everybody else...looking behind the facade, it was one big ego-show and some people where pretty rotten behind that and absolutely no one I saw dedicated to my youth group had social skills or real empathy. Up till now some of the best and most genuine people I've met are deeply connected with their faith so I guess there are other ways but it remains a fact that what people claim to be part of Christianity may be the exact opposite of it's actual message.

I don't really believe in god but I was raised Christian and I take it very serious as a philosophy to live by because it has all the right rudiments

Artistic comments first. Why are the pews drawn so close together ? In panel 1, the armrest of the pew that Annie is sitting in is touching the back of the pew in front. How did she get in to even sit down ?

The comments made in No.422 " Reasons " again cover many of Annie's concerns. But please let me add additional to today's comic---

Panel 1) God lets things happen to all of us for many good reasons, many not apparent to most unconcerned humans, one of which is that it gives everyone an opportunity to show by our actions what is actually in our mind, heart, and soul, and not what we just speak or think about. It takes time to do that, years in fact.

Panel 2 & 3) Annie ! God DID NOT " make " you this way ! You were born with a genetic defect in your DNA code, so it actually was your parents who " made " you by means of giving you their DNA, probably already tainted from previous generational defects. Since you were born defective because of this, you certainly were not " pure " at birth. And you have to grow up and understand how forgiveness works, it's not something that God throws out to anyone and everyone with little or no effort on the human's part, like a child handing out candy to everyone regardless, saying " trick or treat ".

Panel 4 & 5) The priest is more or less correct as to the explanation of the prohibition in the scripture. The scripture refers to the deception involved in cross-dressing for a nefarious or deceptive purpose, like when women would cross-dress as a male, so they could enter the male-only or priest-only part of the temple of worship, something that was forbidden for women to do.

Panel 6) God welcomes all to take advantage of spiritual provisions, as long as one's heart condition is humble and honest, and their motive is free of deception and other bad traits. Those who choose otherwise are free to go their own way, apart from anything God has to offer, because God allows that. Each chooses throughout their life what course of action to take, spiritual or otherwise. Many have and will continue to proudly proclaim atheism. What will Annie choose to do ?

Thank you, AnneKrog, for occasionally including spiritual concepts in Wildflowers. It is so rare for an artist to do that, but I enjoyed it.

@CuteDress&TwinPonytails: Artists comments: because I was fucking terrible at art, and I still struggle with basic size and space?

In the previous comments you said 'God didn't create this situation'. So you are saying that your all-knowing and all-loving God had no hand in your genetic structure, bringing your parents with broken genes together, the incorrect hormones wash in the womb, or any other possible 'God's hand'? So basically, there was no god in your birth, and no god leading up to your life/transition?

The logical fallacy of god's "long term plan" is demented and evil. "Well, god made you, Ms Krog, transgender so that you could help others through their struggles with transgenderism". Or maybe this 'all loving god' could just not have made me, or anyone else, these fucked up shells.
I'm sorry, a child being born with birth defects 'for gods long term plan' is damning a person for their entire life, to what, maybe help some other people? Or as the LONG term people thing, all the suffering is the black plague was to help advance medicine? Guess what. If we had the cure to black plague, or better, just didn't have the fucking plague, a huge number of incredibly smart people would have survived, bred, and had smart offspring.

The concept of 'free will' in a universe made of pain and hurt is the most disturbing thing I could possibly comprehend. Take a step back for a moment. You. You give birth to a child. You then lock said child into a series of rooms with burners of ovens turned on, broken glass to walk across, barbed metals littering this series of rooms. Your child, which YOU CHOSE to put into this series of rooms, has free will. Free will to do the things that YOU PUT THERE for it to be hurt on. If any parent in any country were to do that, they would be punished as a terrible parent, the child taken away on charges of abuse, and they would never be allowed care of another being ever again.
Well, have fun, because your 'heavenly father' decided to give you free will, so you can eat the apple HE MADE, so you can be born transgender FOR NO REASON, so that you can contract HIV through an expression of love and pass it on to your children. Your heavenly father locked you in a room of pain and then blames YOU for taking the wrong path.

There are only three options to this sick, disgusting display of evil.
1) There is a god out there, making transgender people, laughing at us when we take our lives and get murdered, ignoring our prayers.
2) There is a god out there, who has no power to answer our prayers. All knowing, and utterly flaccid.
3) There is no god, nobody hearing our prayers, and this living hell has nothing to do with religion, just shitty luck.

In any of these three scenarios, there is absolutely no gain to praying. Because your god is either not listening, listening and refuses to fix it, or doesn't exist.

Oh, right, your breakdown of panel 4, 'centuries of dissassociation with God and his principles of life brought this sorry condition'. So.. you are saying that a child born with Downs syndrome is because humans made some poor choices? So you are saying that those born in drought regions who starve and die are at fault because of the decisions they made? If they led a less sinful life of trying to find some fucking water, that their loving god would spare them? Because that seems to be what you are implying.

If I was created to be transgender, and spend my life helping others through it, and knowing inside that I will be forever divorced from the simplest of truths that any woman has, then fuck God. Apparently it was my parent's choice of leading sinful lives of having a child out of love that made me this way.

I'm not going to talk any more about God from a personal level, because Wildflowers is supposed to be about hope and love. And the only God I've ever known either abandoned us, has no power to help us, or just plain doesn't exist. And that isn't hope at all.

The AnneKrog writes---
" I'm not going to talk any more about God from a personal level, because Wildflowers is supposed to be about hope and love."

If you have noticed, the only time I commented about these things is when you did, either in the comic, or in your personal realm of comments. If you choose now not to reference these things, neither will I, at least not overtly.

Here's one last illustration. You and I are both climbing a Mount Everest of transgender issues and problems, just to survive. Except I am going to surmount the North Face, and you are going up the South Face. I have a trusted Guide and companion with me to show me the way, but I realize that my beliefs and understandings are no assurance of deliverance from the problems of climbing. But at least I am not lonely or depressed so bad so as to give up climbing alltogether, or just jump off or misstep and fall off of the face of the mountain. You dismissed your guide because you thought they may try and hurt you,rob you, or push you off of the mountain, so you have decided to go it alone. Your choice. Now you are halfway up, but tired and injured, and ready to give up. Oh, I wish there was a way that the three of us could climb sideways around the perimeter of the mountain, and then meet on the side of the mountain halfway up, and then help one another up to the summit.

Your seeming less-than-desirable personal life and feelings, and the things that you do to yourself, do keep soaking through the comic and your personal comments, despite your reassurances that they will not. I want to help you, and others in the same frame of mind, but how ???

Forget all the other churches/priests Annie's visited - to date, I think this one's the best match for her by far! :)

@mittfh: I failed to point it out, and I was hoping it would be clear from the priest and the school uniform - this is actually the chapel in Toni's school. Based on real events.

..sometimes, even Catholic schools get it right.
