Hope he is less of a pushover in the actual trial. Then again, nobody has been able to stand up to the onslaught of a raging Dr Bernt.

Oh, and let it be known that I couldn't come up with a last name, so I just went with the name of Princess Cadance, the Alicorn who is in charge of the Crystal Kingdom. And I have NO APOLOGIES!

I'm terribly confused. Wouldn't this case be handled by the DA's office, because crimes are prosecuted by the state? Or if this is civil court, a personal lawyer? Why is a public defender involved with Annie's side of the legal battle at all?

And secondly, Dr. Bernt, CHILL. I appreciate the sentiment, but when someone says they understand, after having zero seconds to actually understand the situation which has apparently not been explained to them, please just take them at their word. The legal breif could have easily said that the Bloody Maiden was a crossdresser which the public defender obviously had no time to verify if he didn't even meet with Annie prior to the courthouse. Public Defenders do a shitty job for almost no pay, and considering this guy is old, is probably in it for the ethics and not just as a rung on his career ladder.

@Erin: Odd, I didn't put my disclaimer on not having a clue what I am doing until later in the chapter. So let me make this absolutely clear for you: I have no idea how the legal system works for this. I don't know who handles this, where it is handled, in what time frame, who is assigned or how any of this operates. So please disregard any of it as actual proper proceedings and assume that the author (me) has only ever learned about the legal system from the TV show CSI.

I hope this disclaimer has been satisfactory.

As for not being aware of Annie being transgender, I somehow doubt that this was a surprise to him. This was intended to be stressed when it is brought up in "full outfit", as in "dressed as a girl". This was intended to demonstrate that Cadance does indeed understand that Annie was hurt for crossdressing, but that Cadance does not understand that 'full outfit' is not crossdressing but being the person she should be.
Given how important Annie's identity is to the proceedings and it being classified as a hate crime, I would say that Julie driving it home that Cadance needs to fully understand is acceptable.

I get where you are coming from about Julie being very aggressive and not giving time - I can only hope you can see how she doesn't have time to give.
