If you are wondering about the title? I have heard this one before. This is how some people view sex, gender, skin colour, handicap, intelligence, heritage, birthright of money, etc. And I for one am a million percent behind it. We are who we make of ourselves, not who others say we are.

Some people say that there is a glass ceiling in the IT world for women. I manage an international software company and coordinate America and China with our tech team and development. I did not gain it by being pretty or sitting around waiting to be noticed. I got off my ass, I started doing other people's jobs, I showed my boss that I am a gorram amazing woman, and I took my power by force. When I worked in sales as a man (pre-transition), I worked my ass off and I was the best counter sales for that entire year. When I worked in a call center DURING transition, my calls times were the best in the place for TWO YEARS and I was first to show area outages because I DID THAT. Not me being white. Not me being a girl. Not being a boy. Not a gorram thing except ME.

If anyone ever tries to tell you that you are going to be held back by anything other than your actual actions, smash them. Make them see, without error, that you are as amazing as you say you are. And if you aren't that awesome - stop claiming it, and find the thing you ARE amazing at. You are what you make of yourself.

Two positives here: the potential bullies recoil on hearing the revelation rather than try to beat her up, and currently unnamed chap's "Reality Check" speech.

Hopefully (a) he isn't a one-off cameo, (b) he has an open-minded family, (c) he isn't likely to move away in the next few months.

Even as a platonic friend, he could be useful for Annie to have around when times get tough... :)

@mittfh: Sorry, he never shows up again. Just a good guy, passing by in the night. Isn't that what the world could use more of?
