I want to make something clear - I am not a feminist. I am a humanist. I believe that all people make their own choices, and that is based on who they are, not WHAT they are. I am absolutely intolerant of anyone who shames a woman for wanting to be a cheerleader, or anyone who shames a man for wanting to watch violent movies. What makes a person happy is what makes them happy. How they express themselves is their choice, not the choice of others to force on them.

That all said, I do have a certain feminist bent. WF is framed from a largely feminist perspective as so much of Annie's life is based on 'what is it to be a woman'. A huge portion of trans people get so stuck in gender roles and what they need to work with/rebel against that they forget to just be happy with what they want. In Annie's case, she is so bloody focused on how she is losing male privilege and being downgraded to 'just a girl' that I am making it as clear as I can that there is no such thing as 'just a girl'.

You want to meet a group of empowered women? Go talk to cheerleaders. Go talk to prostitutes. Go talk to any woman who uses their body for what THEY want. You want to understand objects? Men can be used and discarded just because you waggle your body parts.

Sorry, I kinda hate Anita Sarkeesian, and I have about 18 hours of video I can link about WHY I despise what she has been doing to feminism and humanism. I think she actually needs to go talk to some women for a while - not tumblr feminists, not 'victims of the patriarchy', but REAL WOMEN.

It's okay, I hate Anita Sarkeesian too, though for different reasons. I simply find her to be a terrible, horribly biased critic. Her videos are regularly based on poorly researched or downright false information. I genuinely want a feminist voice in gaming, I just wish it wasn't her.

@Anon: The outright lies she spouts are what really bothers me. It destroys the possible benefit we would have from a proper conversation. I assure you, I rag on her pretty hard in the comments from time to time because of what she does. If you haven't already, Thunderf00t on YouTube does a video by video breakdown of every lie she has spread during her victim routine and lack of proper research.

The problem in relation to feminism is that it makes her, the frontrunner for feminism in gaming, also be the frontrunner for representing geek culture. Which we know at this point is a hugely growing group (thanks in no small part to the resurgence of fantasy and sci-fi). We do have real issues that need to be dealt with, but we will never deal with them so long as we have her destroying the conversation. It is such a shame - it is the feminist equiv to bringing up Nazis, but nobody knows that Anita has gone full Godwins Law except the people who already don't respect her.

@GreenKrog: I guess the real problem is, ultimately, that she's not a gamer. Nothing in her behavior suggests that she genuinely loves video games.

We need people who celebrate how much video games have moved forward in the last few decades, and want them to keep moving in the right direction. Instead, we get Anita Sarkeesian who's basically saying "Everything you love is horrible and so are you."

This in turns exacerbates the hostility gamers have towards feminism. I'm not going to do something as stupid as blame Anita Sarkeesian for the sexism in gaming, or pretend that there is no problem at all. However, I do think her behavior tends to make the mysogynists in the gaming community sound almost justified, and that's not good for anyone.

@Anon: I couldn't agree more. Her whole narrative has been a lie, which is really what bothers me. If she was simply an inept gamer, I could forgive her narrative as ignorance. But no, she knows exactly how to play against the gaming community by speaking only to the non-gamers after stealing the hundreds of thousands of kickstarter dollars from the gamers.

The greatest irony of this entire thing is that because of how terrible she has been at this, the vocal majority of gamers (men, lets not kid ourselves, I mean men) have started to point out how anti-feminist the gaming community has been. Because we are doing everything we can to fix it so that Anita's narrative is a failure, we are actively fixing it. If only that had been her purpose from the start, instead of stealing hundreds of thousands and not actually giving her backers the videos she promised...

She isn't responsible for the neckbeards getting riled up. But she is responsible for creating divisions in the community, or at least, increasing those divisions by bringing tumblr feminism to the mainstream. People like HER get attention instead of women like Mona Walter or Ayaan Hirsi Ali. That bothers me in ways I can't properly quantify.
