How does Annie's hair goes from happy and perky to totally flat and disheveled when she gets depressed? The magic of needing it for story purposes. YAY SHORTCUTS!

Ok, seriously, did Wendy not read the forums? If not, Annie is going to have to explain the CeeCue thing later and it will be VERY awkward.

I think that Wendy thinks that Annie's mom is some form of crazy (and by crazy, I mean mentally ill, I use it as short form, I am not being offensive, I am a bipolar transgender - a crazy tranny. Reclaimed!). The back and forth in frame 5, I am pretty sure is about Wendy trying to figure out why Deb is calling Annie Tony. And wow, that is.. wow.

Is this a metaphor for someone being supportive without even knowing they are supportive? Or is this Wendy being supportive and trying to do it in a way that isn't "I support your transness".

How much does Wendy know?! Argh! I don't know! I really don't! It's been a month and Wendy is supposed to know everything about everyone and aaargh! I can't wait to write next week's stuff!

I'm betting Wendy knows perfectly well who Annie is, and that she's CheerQueen16 from the forums. I'm also betting that she doesn't outright say it to Annie because Annie isn't ready to talk about it, and she respects her friend's decision to be discreet.

Honestly, at this point I think Wendy would have to seriously be dense to not figure it out, so I'm assuming she knows. Yes, I am taking into account the fact that people who have never had experience with transgender people before tend not to jump to that conclusion as fast as we do.

Annie's somewhat odd and secretive behavior since school started has got to at least have gotten Wendy's attention, and with the forums that she's probably seen or the rumors from those forums that she's probably heard, and now Annie's mom calling her Tony, she probably at least suspects the truth. Otherwise, the comic is veering dangerously close to sitcom territory, where people brush off anything weird so long as a barely satisfactory answer is blurted out fast enough.

@Yan Mouson: This isn't the first time Wendy has heard Annie be called Tony. Pretty sure right now that Wendy honestly believes that Deb (Annie's mom) is in some weird mourning/denial phase and thinks that her daughter is actually her dead son. I understand that this is not entirely uncommon with trauma-caused dementias. Wendy also knows that Annie hasn't been in town very long, so it stands to reason that Annie moving in when Tony died would be a tough mental spot for a parent to cope with if the two look similar.

I won't pretend like it isn't sitcommy, because this has been played out before in various mangas I've read. But I will say that I am not just putting it in there and pretending like people are too stupid to see through things. There are solid reasons why most of the things happen how they happen!

Another thing about Wendy that has not yet been made clear: she puts immense trust in her friends. This will become more apparent as the story progresses, and I have failed as a writer in establishing that early on. Wendy and Cindi probably know everything about each other, and I mean everything! So in Wendy's mind, Annie would just tell her if there was something this major over their heads. Plus add seeing Annie's up-skirt areas with no 'package' as such, and she would have no reason to think Annie is anything but a girl, right? Likewise, Annie has pretended to have a period before, been more or less nude in front of the cheer captains, and has always put on her best face through everything. It is quite plausible that Wendy just wouldn't believe any of this unless she literally saw Annie naked. I mean, what cause would she have right now to think otherwise? Some random jerk on a forum is talking smack about a celebrity?

In a way, you could say that Tony is dead.

Or, at least, the name and some of the associated baggage as they apply to the person now legally known as Annie.

Still, regardless of how much Wendy does / does not know, it's nice to have people who'll stick up for her in the face of abuse - even if that abuse is from her mum. If the rest of the cheer and swimming teams have the same attitudes as CQ16, then "one for all and all for one" may kick in (and beware anyone who tries to call them dogs [1]).
