Julie is trying extremely hard to focus on who Annie is, not who she isn't. When we look at everyone we can say, I'm not that, I'm not her, I'm not him. But we can't see who we are when we look in the mirror, because there is nothing there to base it on unless you have others to see in comparison.
How can you love yourself if you don't even know who you are?

Was Dr Bernt, aka Julie, really a lonely smart young girl? Probably. She seems like she was a nerd who cared too much. That doesn't tend to make a lot of friends. I like her hair back when she was 15. And even though Annie is clearly only half-remembering who she was - it is a huge improvement over how she usually remembers herself.

"I'm a girl.. but.. not." How is that even a sentence?
