I don't know if the overdose damage that Annie did to herself will prohibit her from surgery. It will take a lot more research before I can get that answer. Right now, I don't care, because Annie doesn't care. She will be who she is until then, and if not, past then as well. That is what matters.

Come on Annie!

An bit of skin and tissue doesn't define who you are. It took me a long time to be comfortable with that but the peace and calm you find when you do is wonderful. So we're a little messed up in places? So what. Literally 'Nobody' (see what I did there ;) ) is perfect.

@Becky: That is what Dr Bernt is trying to get Annie to understand. You just happen to be a whole bunch of steps ahead of her.

Genitalia...

Growing up, my fantasies generally involved some form of me 'becoming a woman/girl' but they also often included somehow keeping my penis.

The message of "Women don't have penises" was so ingrained in me though, that when I finally accepted that I was trans, I decided I NEEDED SRS. but after a while, after thinking about it, and some experimentation...

I came to understand myself better, and realized that for me, my penis is a part of me, of who I am.

I would be happy to have a labia, I would enjoy the feeling of validation, but I would miss my penis, just as much as I currently 'miss' my labia.

@Marci: And that is something only you can decide. Overcoming our inborn prejudices so we can decide what makes US happy, and not what other people say should make us happy, is what life is about. Be that enjoying country music, watching My Little Pony as a 30 year old, or whatever things people generally look at and say 'that's dumb' despite having their own things people look weirdly at.
I hear a lot of trans women saying that they would keep their penis, if only the bloody thing actually worked properly when on hormones! So you are not even remotely alone in your understanding of yourself.
