How can that even happen? Annie is her LEGAL name and she has been there before. Again, as in the nurse's office at school, this seems sort of contrived.

@sunspark: I had my legal change of name in 2006. I had my SRS in 2009. The gender on my birth certificate and identification wasn't changed until 2016.

Maybe where you are from it is easier, but in Alberta at the time Annie is living in, it wasn't. In BC, where I moved in 2010, my BC health care did show my correct gender, as did my drivers license, despite my birth certificate showing incorrectly. Stop calling it contrived and accept that not everything is based off of legal name.

OK. My apologies. It's just that you went out of your way to say that she's HAD her legal name changed, so she should be registered at school (which the Bernts did for her) and the hospital (where, since Dan works there, he'd also have made sure that her legal name was how she was registered). I apologize for the word "contrived," which I now realize sounds pretty insulting. I should have taken the time to explain myself more completely as I just did.

@sunspark: Nobody except Nurse Kevin has called her anything but her legal name. Everyone else has just been dicks about her pronouns. Kevin only did it because he is a moron, not because he is malicious.

You might note that Harper has gone out of his way to NOT call Annie by her name or pronouns - this is because he legally has to but refuses to, so he opts for simply last name in all cases.
You might also note that Harper began doing this BEFORE the entry of bill C16 to the Canadian government which enforces the behavior of pronoun and desired names, and that the legal loophole around obeying that law is to simply call people by their last name. I guess I saw it coming from quite some time before everyone else did. Then again, Harper served in the military, so it isn't entirely out of question that he would use last names because of his immersion in to that branch of society.

I wouldn't have minded you calling it contrived so much if I hadn't already explained this on a previous page when you called me contrived before. I may do a lot of things with the sole purpose of driving plot forward, but I do try to do them within the realm of both logic and reason to the universe as crafted.

I know. You are one of the most thoughtful webcomic writers I've run into, as well as THE most willing to engage your fans, among whom I absolutely count myself. I was reacting the the SECOND person to call her "Mr. Andrews" when they should have had no reason to: whoever paged her at the hospital.

Again, though, I do apologize for the use of an incendiary word like "contrived." You're clearly better than that.
